Happy New Year Pack Rips!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope everyone had a fantastic 2016! With the new year always comes a New Years Resolution...this year, I am going to send stuff to COMC to sell. I have been meaning to do it, but this year, I am finally going to go through with it. Also, I really wanted to start donating cards again. I haven't done this in a while, but it really is time to do it again. My nephew just has no interest, so I'm done trying to get him interested in something he thinks is boring. That was tough typing that last sentence, but oh well.

Anyways, to the blog post. Today, the wife and I ventured out so she could buy some new work clothes and we also needed to grab some coconut water. We eventually landed at Target after going to a few clothing stores. We grabbed the large containers of coconut water and I told her I wanted to buy some retail packs. Over at where they are located, there was a guy feeling all the loose packs. I know, this guy is a total dirt bag. Since I spotted this, I decided to go with the already packed Fairfield pack lots that Target sells. 10 packs for $10. Can't beat it. I grabbed 2 and we headed for home.

Here's what the package looked like:

The boxes contained the following:

  • 2 Packs of 1990/91 Pro Set
  • 2 Packs of 1990/91 Score
  • 8 Packs of 2012/13 Score
  • 2 Packs of 2015/16 UD MVP
  • 2 Packs of 2004/05 Pacific
  • 1 Pack of 2015/16 Upper Deck Series 1
  • 3 Packs of 2015/16 Upper Deck Series 2
My wife decided to get in on the ripping action with me. We opened the Pro Set first..

From the pack, we are supposed to receive 15 cards in each pack

Here's how the cards look

Front

NHL Championship card with Messier and Steve Smith on it

Not bad...Cujo and Jagr Rookies so far!

Onto the 90/91 Score

The wrapper says 15 cards per pack. You don't see that nowadays..

Here's how the cards look...it's like a rink on the card, goal line to blue line, to red line, to blue line, back down to goal line...I still think these cards are sweet!

Front

Seriously though, what kind of face is Mr. Olausson making here??

Back

So, how did I do? Let's just see...

Pack 1

Fredrik Olausson
Doug Bodger
Brian Mullen (Slippery Rock Joe's brother!)
Guy Carbnneau (former Canadiens Captain)
Curt Giles (former North Stars Captain)
Cam Russell NHL Prospect '90 RC (per hockeydb.com Cam had 396 games under his belt in his career and 872 PIM's!)
Peter Lappin NHL Prospect '90 RC (I remember having his Upper Deck Star Rookie when I was a kid)
Martin Brodeur 1st Round Draft Pick RC!!! (Sweet! I have doubles now! Minor touch on one corner though)
Mike Ricci 1st Round Draft Pick RC
Patrick Roy (SWEET!)
Doug Wilson All Star Second Team (he's helmetless as is tradition)
Kim Issel NHL Prospect '90 RC (it says he was a 1st round pick, so I had to look him up...apparently he played 4 NHL games going scoreless)
Randy Wood (hated him when I was growing up...David Volek too as a matter of fact)
Sylvain Turgeon (rocking that Cooper lid)
Craig Janney (who seemed to make everyone he played with a 50 goal scorer...a very underrated player in my opinion)

Awesome first pack! On to pack 2..

Pack 2

Kelly Hrudey (that mask gets me every time!)
Hubie McDonough (a few things about Mr. McDonough...I think he got poked in the eye with a stick and it was pretty gross back in he day...at least I think it was him and there was an issue of Beckett in the 90's of his 91/92 Upper Deck card where he was celebrating and someone made it look like he was singing...I don't know, I remember it for some reason and that I laughed at it)
Alex Mogilny RC (Mogilny was just awesome..)
Tony Granato (Cammie's bro and brother in law to Ray Ferraro)
Randy Moller
Derian Hatcher 1st Round Draft Pick RC (I could never stand this guy)
Owen Nolan 1st Round Draft Pick RC (SWEET!)
Cam Neely Banger (I can honestly say this is the first time I've seen a Banger card from this set..odd)
Bill Ranford Stopper (I loved these! Goalies rule!)
Mike Krushelnyski
Curtis Joseph RC (2nd CUJO Rookie today!)
Michel Goulet (not to be confused with Robert)
John Ogrodnick
John Ogrodnick (again? 2 in one pack..c'mon Score quality control!)
Mike Modano RC (what a way to end the pack - although I did see this card at the bottom when I opened it)

After just these 4 packs, I am content with my purchase due to the Brodeur and the other rookies...but we'll move on because my wife wants to open these things up!

onto the 2012/13 Score

7 cards per pack, 1 Gold Rush card per pack, there are Black Ice parallels, The Franchise inserts, First Goal Inserts, Net Cam Inserts...sweet. Let's do it

Front

I still can't believe Jagr was a Dallas Star for a part of a season...weird

Back

The first thing I noticed with this product is the photography. Some of these pictures are brilliant. Others are duds. I do like that the back has all of their stats though. For some reason you never see that anymore. On with the break..

Pack 1

Brandon Saad Gold Rush
Dainius Zubrus
Milan Hejduk
Patrik Berglund
Eric Staal
Evgeni Malkin Award Winners
Marian Gaborik

Pack 2

Rich Peverley
Johan Hedberg
Sam Gagner
Jaromir Jagr
Jakob Silfverberg Hot Rookies RC (these are ugly...not even worth a scan)
Drew Miller
Kris Letang Gold Rush

Pack 3

Patrik Elias
Jamie McGinn
Martin Brodeur
Teemu Selanne
Craig Smith First Goal Insert (My boy Craig Smith, I love it!)

A cool concept...taking a photo from when the player scores his first goal and outlining the milestone...I like it!
Bryan Bickell
Nicklas Lidstrom Gold Rush

Pack 4

Dustin Brown
Taylor Hall (sporting a black eye, I'm guessing from the time he fell in pre-game skate)
Ryan Johansen
Krys Barch (they'll give anyone a hockey card anymore...)
Gordie Howe The Franchise Insert (these are ugly)

Ray Whitney
Slava Voynov Gold Rush (he's a jerk)

Pack 5

Patrice Bergeron
Manny Malhotra
Zenon Konopka
Steven Stamkos
Brayden Holtby Net Cam (the photo on this thing is unreal...scope it out)

Ryan Clowe
Travis Zajac Gold Rush

Pack 6

Nazem Kadri
Erik Karlsson
Brandon Prust
Semyon Varlomov
Brandon Manning Hot Rookies RC
Jussi Jokinen
Henrik Sedin Gold Rush

Pack 7

Devante Smith-Pelly
Ryan McDonagh
Andy McDonald
Antoine Vermette
J.T. Brown Hot Rookies RC
Jonathan Quick
Ilya Kovalchuk Gold Rush

Pack 8

Nick Spaling
Henrik Lundqvist Season Highlight
John Moore
Michal Neuvirth
Jimmy Howard Net Cam Insert
Henrik Zetterberg
Brad Marchand Gold Rush

Not bad. I have no clue what the odds are for the Inserts as the wrapper just outlines how many are in each set, so...who knows. I remember when the Franchise inserts were a big deal. Now they just look dumb.

My wife wants to open the UD MVP Packs, so that's where we are heading...

Silver Scripts are 1:6, Gold Scripts are #'d to 100, NHL Territories Material 1:750, Rookie Redemption are 1:3,840...yeah, there's no way I pull anything that's those odds (Silver Scripts maybe)..

There are 5 cards per pack

Front

Back

Pack 1

Patrik Elias
Nathan MacKinnon
Drew Doughty
Duncan Keith
Dustin Byfuglien

Pack 2

Jonathan Drouin Checklist (Really...?)
Tyler Bozak
Filip Forsberg Silver Script (not bad)
Shea Weber
Joffrey Lupul

So I beat the odds pulling the Forsberg Silver Script. I was upset that I got a checklist as one of my cards though. That sucks. Thanks Upper Deck. I do like the design on these cards though and they are really glossy. My wife really liked the look of them as well.

For the 2nd to last set of packs that we are going to open, is the Pacific 2004/05. These cards were produced during the lockout season. Therefore, I do not believe there are rookies in this set. I did not purchase any of this product that season. These will be completely new to me. Here we go...

There are 7 cards per pack. Parallels are Red 1:3 and Blue (which are serial #'d) 1:10. Game jerseys are 2:36 and a whole bunch of other inserts and Game Jerseys....

Front

Back

How sweet is Conroy's mustache in this pic? It screams pass me the puck! I love that Pacific gave full stats on the back. Like I said previously, I miss that.

Pack 1

Mario Lemieux (hell yes...probably one of the best cards in this set!)
Craig Conroy
Barret Jackman Red Parallel
Tyler Arnason
Mike Dunham
Pascal Dupuis (DUPER! When he was with the Wild to boot)
Dan Ellis

Good pack!

Pack 2

Teemu Selanne
Todd Marchant
Rick Nash Pacific All-Stars Insert (looks like 1:10 odds - Nice!)
Olli Jokinen (when he grew long hair, he was the weirdest looking dude I've ever seen...google it if you don't believe me)
Martin Erat (who was traded for Filip Forsberg at a trade deadline...awful, awful trade)
Todd Bertuzzi
Marcel Goc (former Penguin)

And finally, on to the Upper Deck...

Some packs say 8 cards per pack, others say 5...oh well.

I'm not going to outline every card in these packs as I have to make dinner tonight, I do however have a photo of one of the cards for a reason..check out this Riley Nash

Ok, what's the big deal? He's just standing there...however, the action is happening behind him..

This poor dad just wants to get his son interested in hockey instead of Minecraft, so he takes him to a game, but the kid won't stop crying...either that or he knows he's about to watch Hurricanes hockey. Either way, it was hilarious. My wife and I couldn't stop laughing at it!

So to end the post, in the Upper Deck packs, the only cards other than base cards were the following:

Devin Shore Young Guns
Slater Koekkoek Young Guns
Nick Shore UD Portraits

Thanks for reading. Everything is available for trade except for the Craig Smith and the Marty Brodeur Score RC. Happy New Year all!
